Everything You Need To Know About HomeSafe ID Registry Shut-down
Updated Febuary 19, 2025
If your pet was registered with HomeSafeID, there’s an important update that could affect their safety. HomeSafeID has permanently shut down, which means any microchip details stored in their database are no longer accessible.
This change is critical for pet owners because microchips only work if they’re linked to an active and up-to-date registry. If your pet was registered with HomeSafeID, action is needed to ensure their details remain available in case they ever go missing.
What Does This Mean for Pet Owners?
Microchip registries operate independently, and it’s the owner’s responsibility to keep their contact details up to date. Since HomeSafeID no longer exists, pets that were previously registered with them now have no linked contact information.
The good news? You can re-register your pet’s microchip with another database to restore their identification records. Below, Dr Julie from MustCare Vet Centre at Algester explains the process of what to do next. Still not sure? Check our quick and easy steps below.
Steps to Ensure Your Pet’s Microchip Stays Active
Step 1: Locate Your Pet’s Microchip Number
Your pet’s microchip number is essential for updating their details. If you don’t have it on record, you can:
- Check your vet records or adoption paperwork
- Visit your vet, local council, or an animal shelter to have their microchip scanned
Step 2: Confirm Their Current Registration
To see if your pet was registered with HomeSafeID, enter their microchip number at www.petaddress.com.au. If HomeSafeID appears as their registry, you’ll need to re-register with a new database.
Step 3: Choose a New Microchip Registry
Since details won’t transfer automatically, pet owners must manually register with a different microchip database. Here are some recommended options:
- Global Micro Animal Registry – Offers free re-registration
- Australasian Animal Registry (AAR) – Charges a one-time fee of $15
- Central Animal Records (CAR) – A widely used registry for pets in Australia
- Petsafe – Another option for secure microchip storage
After registering, double-check that you receive confirmation to ensure your pet’s details are properly stored.
Step 4: Keep Your Contact Information Up to Date
A microchip is only effective if your details are correct. While you’re in the process of re-registeration, make sure your phone number, email, and address are all accurate so you can be reached if your pet is found.
